Trenton Release Destinations

Trenton Correctional Institution is operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. It is not the Edgefield County jail. SCDC describes the institution as a medium- and minimum-custody prison for adult men. People held there are within the statewide prison system, so their custody status and discharge records belong to SCDC.

A person leaving Trenton may enter the community at the end of a state custody term, begin probation or another form of supervision, move under a parole decision, or pass to another authority under a detainer. The person may also transfer to another SCDC institution. Only the first group represents an exit from state confinement. An institutional movement without a state release record must not be labeled a discharge.

Confirm Trenton State Release

SCDC maintains separate tools for current and released people. The current-inmate search covers people presently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC, with data described as current through the prior midnight. It excludes released people and those on community supervision. A missing name is therefore not proof of release. The Released Inmate List is the correct public starting point after state custody ends.

1. Select a beginning date, ending date, and Edgefield in the released list.
2. Review every results page because the system displays matching rows in groups.
3. Compare the SCDC ID, name, sex, race, and age to avoid joining two people.
4. Read the exact release date, release type, and any detainer value.
5. Use SCDC records or SCDPPPS when the release type or destination needs more detail.

The list has no name field. Its county filter is not defined as an institution filter. An Edgefield-filtered row may relate to another SCDC administrative county classification and is not automatic proof of a physical Trenton departure. Link the public result to Trenton only when the person's custody record or another SCDC source supports that connection.

Trenton Records and Contact

The SCDC institutions directory supplies Trenton's address and telephone channels. Facility staff can help distinguish a location question from a statewide records request. Questions about an actual state discharge record or sentence calculation may need the central SCDC unit rather than county detention staff.

For a formal request, SCDC directs written FOIA requests to FOIA@doc.sc.gov or the FOIA Coordinator, Office of General Counsel, Post Office Box 21787, Columbia, SC 29221-1787. Give the person's full name, SCDC ID when known, a close release-date range, and the exact existing record sought. Ask for the actual date and type of discharge, any public destination or transfer field, and the final sentence-calculation entry.

Trenton State Prison Records

SCDC identifies Trenton as a medium/minimum institution for adult men and lists its opening year as 1995. Those facts define the custody type. County-jail concepts such as a sheriff roster or county booking release do not control this page. Likewise, the Edgefield County Detention Center telephone line cannot confirm whether a state prisoner was discharged.

The ordinary SCDC search can show an SCDC ID, location, housing information, a photograph, and other public details for a current inmate. It is useful as the first half of a two-tool check. A current Trenton match means the person remains in state custody as of the tool's reporting point. When the current result ends, move to the released list and records process rather than assuming why it ended.

Trenton Release Record Fields

The ordinary released-list table shows SCDC ID, name, sex, race, age, sex-offender indicator, release date, release type, and county. The Export control can expose added fields labeled SID, Victim, Detainer, and MSO. Keep “MSO” as the agency's label because the research found no official expansion. These fields can help distinguish the event and person without stretching the result beyond what SCDC states.

Release types observed in official Edgefield-filtered results include RELEASE, PROBATION, and INTENSIVE SUPV. The latter two support departure from physical SCDC confinement while also indicating continued community control. A positive detainer indicator can signal a handoff to another government custodian. In each case, the sound statement is that SCDC reports release on the listed date and by the listed type. It is not safe to say the person was free of all custody or supervision.

Trenton Post-Release Supervision

The SCDPPPS offender search is the next check when the released record indicates parole, probation, intensive supervision, or another community status. SCDPPPS warns that its public search represents previous-day information and directs current questions to the county of supervision. A person can be out of prison yet remain subject to agency conditions.

Edgefield's SCDPPPS office is at 129 Courthouse Square, Suite 109, Edgefield, SC, with telephone 803-637-4083. Contact that office when Edgefield is the reported supervision county. A supervision result does not rewrite the SCDC release event. It adds the post-release status, responsible office, and reporting context.

Discharge

An exit from the state correctional custody term as recorded by SCDC.

Parole

Conditional community release under Board authority and supervision.

Probation

Court-ordered community supervision, which may appear as a release type.

Detainer

A hold that may lead to another custodian taking control.

Trenton Versus Edgefield Custody

Three distinct systems operate within Edgefield County. Trenton is SCDC custody. Edgefield County Detention Center is sheriff-operated local custody. FCI Edgefield is federal BOP custody. Physical proximity does not merge their records. Each system has its own locator, release terms, and formal records channel.

The Edgefield County released inmate lookup explains how to identify the custodian before searching. For Trenton, the state released list leads. For the county jail, call and request sheriff records. For FCI Edgefield, use the BOP locator. When a record names a transfer, follow the receiving system. This prevents an institutional move from being reported as a full release.

SCDC's county filter deserves special care in a county with a state prison. The label does not prove the release occurred at Trenton. The current detail, institutional history, records response, or another SCDC source must connect the individual to the facility. The facility page can establish that Trenton exists in Edgefield County, but only a person-specific record can establish that the individual left it.

The release list should also be checked page by page. Official instructions say results appear ten at a time, and arrow controls reveal later groups. The Export option contains added fields not present in the ordinary table. A person can be missed if only the first screen is read. Save the SCDC ID from a matching row because it is the most useful key for later calls, supervision checks, and a focused records request.

Trenton Discharge Record Requests

SCDC's legal information page gives a written route when the public searches do not answer the destination question. A request should identify the person, SCDC ID, approximate departure date, and the exact existing discharge or transfer record. The agency publishes charges of ten cents per black-and-white page, twenty-five cents per color page, and $18.95 per hour for search, retrieval, and redaction as of the research date. A deposit or payment may be required. These are SCDC rates, not Edgefield County fees.

South Carolina FOIA permits an agency to charge actual costs for search, retrieval, redaction, and production. It also permits a deposit of no more than one quarter of the reasonably expected cost. Asking for electronic production and a written estimate can keep the request narrow. If SCDC withholds part of a record, ask it to identify the legal basis and produce the nonexempt remainder.

SCDC does not publish one universal retention period for every release record. Older material remains subject to the applicable state archives and agency schedule. Ask which record series and schedule controls if a modern search does not reach the needed year.

Trenton Search Update Timing

SCDC describes the current search as a prior-midnight snapshot. A same-day movement may not appear at once. If facility information and the public screen differ, check after the next update or call the inmate information line. The delayed public screen should not be treated as a live gate log or used to guess the kind of departure.
