Detention Center Release Routes

The Edgefield County Detention Center is the county jail operated by the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office. It holds a different population from Trenton Correctional Institution and FCI Edgefield. A person may be there before trial, while serving a short county sentence, or while waiting for transfer after a felony conviction. The correct released-person trail starts with that county custody episode, not with a state or federal locator.

A community departure can follow posted bond, completion of a county term, dismissal, or another judge's order. Yet “left the jail” can also mean transfer. The receiving agency may be the South Carolina Department of Corrections, another county jail, a federal authority, or another lawful custodian. Ask for both the departure type and the receiving agency. Without those fields, the bare fact that a person is no longer inside the building does not establish that the person returned to the community.

Confirm Edgefield Jail Release

The Sheriff's official page states that there is no online way to look up inmates. It directs the public to the detention center. That transparent absence matters: unofficial rosters and a person's disappearance from a search page are not substitutes for the jail's record. 1. Call the detention center and ask whether the named person remains physically confined.
2. If not, ask for the date, time, and classification of departure, plus the receiving agency when the event was a transfer.
3. Request the booking and release record from Sheriff's Office Records, using a date range and identifying details.
4. Find the court case in the Edgefield Public Index and obtain the bond, dismissal, sentencing, or other filed order.
5. If the jail identifies a transfer, continue in the receiving system instead of calling the event a community release.

Detention Center Records Contact

The current department source places the Law Enforcement Center at Star Road. The older Sheriffs' Association directory remains useful for direct records and detention numbers, but it still shows the former Railroad Street address. Call before mailing a request or arriving in person. No official online request form, county copy-fee schedule, retention promise, or release-desk hours were found.

A focused request should seek the booking number, booking and release timestamps, release disposition with any code definition, releasing authority, receiving agency or destination if transferred, charges, case numbers, and the associated booking photograph if needed. Ask for an electronic copy, a written cost estimate, and the legal basis for any withheld or redacted field. South Carolina FOIA permits reasonable actual-cost charges, but the research found no local rate that can safely be quoted as the county's price.

Edgefield Detention Center Custody

The county's 2019 comprehensive plan described the former jail as housing men and women awaiting trial, people serving misdemeanor terms usually no longer than 90 days, and felony-convicted people awaiting state transfer. It reported a historical average daily population of 50 and 16 full-time staff. Those figures describe the old setting at that time. They are not the new center's current capacity, current population, or annual release count.

This mix explains why release language must stay precise. A pretrial detainee may leave after bond without a final case result. Someone serving a local sentence may depart after time served. A felony-convicted person may leave the county building only because SCDC assumed custody. The court docket explains the legal event, while the detention record establishes the physical custody event. Neither source should be made to do the other's job.

New Edgefield Release Address

The 2025 Law Enforcement Center report says the roughly 74,000-square-foot, $42 million complex began housing inmates and became operational in March 2025. It brings detention, Sheriff's Office functions, Magistrate offices, and a courtroom into one complex at 264 Star Road. The prior detention center and sheriff building dated to 1978.

This move creates a practical records trap. Older county and association listings can still direct a visitor to 200 Railroad Street, while older Magistrate material may point elsewhere. The current Sheriff's page controls for the detention location. A telephone check remains wise before travel or mail because a public-facing directory may preserve accurate staff numbers alongside a stale street address.

Note: Prefer the current department address and confirm the records unit's accepted delivery method before sending documents or payment.

Three Edgefield Release Systems

Edgefield County contains three facilities that are easy to confuse. The detention center is county custody. Trenton Correctional Institution is an SCDC state prison. FCI Edgefield is a federal Bureau of Prisons institution with a satellite camp. A telephone call to one system will not establish release from another.

Confirm through the detention center, sheriff records, and the related court case.

Federal release

Use the BOP Inmate Locator and preserve its exact custody wording.

Detainer

A hold or request that can cause transfer to another authority instead of community release.

If the county record names a new custodian, follow that trail. A positive SCDC current record confirms state confinement, not release. A BOP result marked released or not in BOP custody speaks only to federal custody. ICE's locator is relevant only when immigration custody is indicated. This system-by-system method prevents a transfer from being misreported as freedom from all custody.

Edgefield Release Court Records

General Sessions and Magistrate records serve different parts of the local court trail. Felony-level General Sessions matters generally run through the Clerk of Court and the Edgefield Public Index. Many lower-level misdemeanor and traffic matters fall within Magistrate Court. The filed order may show bond, dismissal, sentence, or another legal basis, but it does not replace the jail's release timestamp.

Posted hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Magistrate Court is at the Star Road complex, telephone 803-637-4052, with the same posted weekday hours. Use the person's full name, a narrow date range, and any booking or case number. Then compare dates across the booking record and docket. A court disposition may explain why release was authorized. The detention center remains the source that can confirm when the person actually left its physical custody and whether someone else took custody.

South Carolina FOIA adds a formal fallback when a telephone answer is not enough. Section 30-4-30 allows inspection, copying, or electronic transmission of an existing public record, subject to exemptions. Ask for an existing booking, release, or transfer entry rather than asking staff to create a narrative. For records no more than 24 months old, the law generally sets a ten-business-day period for the agency's availability determination. Older records generally receive a twenty-business-day determination period. Production follows on a separate statutory timetable after access is granted or a required deposit is paid.

Some details may be lawfully withheld. Investigative harm, unreasonable privacy invasion, juvenile protections, sealing, and expungement can affect access. South Carolina law requires separation of exempt and nonexempt material when that can be done. A useful request asks the custodian to release the nonexempt remainder and identify the legal basis for each withheld part. This approach is more precise than claiming every booking field must be public.

Recent confinement documents have a distinct rule. Section 30-4-30(D)(3) addresses records identifying people confined during the preceding three months and their availability for inspection during operating hours, unless another law exempts them. It does not require Edgefield County to publish a 24-hour or 72-hour release feed. The sheriff's stated no-online-lookup policy remains consistent with a records process handled by telephone, inspection, and focused written request.

Resolve Edgefield Record Conflicts

When the docket and jail record differ, preserve both dates and ask each custodian to explain its own field. A bond order can precede physical release because processing or another hold remains. A booking record can show transfer after the court matter changes. The actual departure timestamp and disposition should control the description of the jail event.
